Justine Elliot slams Abbott for not bailing out Qantas
RICHMOND MP Justine Elliot slammed Prime Minister Tony Abbott on Tuesday for failing to bail out Qantas.
Mr Abbott last week announced the government's intention to repeal the Qantas Sales Act - which prevents the airline from being majority owned by foreign companies.
Mrs Elliot has expressed concerns the change could mean a loss of Australian jobs.
She said the Federal Government was wrong to allow Qantas to outsource jobs to the international workforce.
"They should be protecting jobs," Mrs Elliot said.
"They should be making sure those people are in secure jobs, and making sure it's sustained for the future in terms of economic growth."
However, a Qantas spokeswoman said there's been no suggestion the airline would move jobs offshore.
With several oppositions to the repeal, she said it's "seemingly unlikely" to get through parliament.
It's understood Qantas is the only airline operating in Australia which must be 51% Australian owned.
