Efficient managing of your staff makes for success

EMPLOYING staff in small business has many issues, challenges and problems. Managing staff is a big challenge for business owners, whether small, medium or large.

Planning for staff should be integrated with other aspects of your business, such as business planning, cash flow forecast and workforce planning.

When hiring employees, time in planning how many staff you can afford and what the skill set needs are is the first step. Key considerations are current turnover, workload, and Human Resource policies plus the employment type you require and if you will offer flexible work arrangements.

Effort equals reward and spending time to create a good relationship from the start greatly reduces staff turnover. Implementing a staff management plan can reap the rewards.

These points are worth consideration when small business owners are looking to attract and keep great staff:

Make training a priority; the more your train your team the better they become. You might say I train them and they go. The reverse of this is you don't train them and they stay! Training can help staff with confidence and decision making and build real success.

Be open with your team by running your business as transparently as possible. This could be as simple as an open plan office.

Keep an open mind by always looking outside the box for ideas. You can look for ways to share knowledge with peers in your industry.
