Drunk cyclist crashed bike when he tried to jump the gutter
A DRUNK cyclist who crashed his pushbike in front of police has been fined $400.
At Ipswich Magistrates Court yesterday, Ronald Ray Kiem pleaded guilty to driving a vehicle, other than a motor vehicle, while under the influence.
The 32-year-old was brought to the attention of police as he was riding his bike in Goodna in the afternoon on October 25.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Jo Colston said Kiem tried to jump a gutter onto a footpath, but crashed in the attempt.
Sgt Colston said Kiem ended up "flinging himself over the handlebars and landing on his back".
When the officers spoke with Kiem it became obvious he was drunk.
Police noticed Kiem had other injuries on him, which they assumed were from other falls from the bike.
He was given a breath test, which revealed a blood-alcohol reading of 0.213 and arrested.
Kiem said was also found in possession of a pipe, which resulted in an additional charge.
Defence lawyer Alexis Oxley said Kiem had been drinking at his sister's house and was pedalling home when the crash took place.
Ms Oxley said her client had been on the disability support pension since the late 90s after he suffered some physical injuries.
Magistrate Stuart Shearer described Kiem's decision to ride his bike while he was drunk as "stupid".
"I'm not too concerned about you riding a bicycle drunk because the only person you hurt is yourself," he told Kiem.
Kiem was convicted and fined.
