Driver trainer wants test to be extended

QUEENSLAND'S tough new practical driving tests are so hard that one person failed it five times during the pilot stage.

Exclusive figures obtained by APN Newsdesk reveal that of the 2851 people tested during the three-month trial last year, 1204 had to re-sit the exam.

Eighty-three failed it twice, 55 got their provisional licence after sitting the test three times, four drivers failed four times and one person failed five times.

The pilot operated in Millmerran, Clifton, Warwick, Stanthorpe, Greenslopes, Strathpine and Cloncurry from April 28 to July 25, 2014.

Forty-six Millmerran and Clifton learner drivers were tested during the pilot.

Twenty-two failed the test once and, of these, one failed twice and one failed three times.

Toowoomba-based Australian Driver Trainers Association Queensland president Paul Kennedy said he would like to see the 30-minute test extended to 45 minutes.

"We're supportive of the new driving test, but the length of time is one of the worries for me," Mr Kennedy said.

"The time-frame they do it in is too short.

"Our association is suggesting the test go back to 45 minutes to be able to do the extra things like going out onto the highways."

Mr Kennedy said reverting to zero tolerance on speed was one of the best changes.

"Allowing 4kmh over the speed limit was sending the wrong message to learner drivers," he said.

"We hope it re-enforces the need to not speed once the learners get their P-plates."
