EMERGENCY services couldn't revive a 66-year-old Coolum man who suffered a suspected heart attack on Alexandra Pde on Wednesday afternoon.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman confirmed the man was announced deceased shortly after arriving at Nambour General Hospital.

"Police will prepare a report for the coroner," she said.

Police, Fire and Ambulance crews were called to the front of the Mandolin Resort at Alexandra Headland after a car collided with a pole.

Staff and rescue crews from the Alex Surf Club tried to revive the man before emergency crews arrived.  

3:45 PM ALEXANDRA Headland Surf Club staff came to the aid of man who crashed into a pole on Alexandra Pde earlier this afternoon.

Police have confirmed the driver was a 66-year-old male from Coolum.

Lifeguard Rob Adsett was one of the first people on scene and said he suspected the man had suffered a heart attack.

"He was in the car by himself. A few of the lifesavers ran over to help," Mr Adsett said.

The Lifeguard of 11 years said fellow members took a defibrillator to the scene in an attempt to revive the man.

"He was unconscious the whole time…they shocked him twice," Mr Adsett said.

"The Police and Ambulance didn't take long to get here."

EARLIER: A MAN has been taken to hospital in a critical condition after crashing on Alexandra Pde, Alexandra Headland.

Fire crews helped remove the man from his vehicle after it crashed into a pole just before 2pm.

A spokesman for Queensland Police said the forensic crash unit would investigate the smash.

Only one lane is open to traffic near the Alexandra Headland Surf Club.

Police are advising drivers to avoid the area.
