DOWN TO THE WIRE: Finals spot on line in cricket

PAST Highs may have left their run too late for this year's finals.

They defeated Brothers by six wickets in division one on Saturday to stay in the hunt for a semi berth.

Bowling out Brothers for 134, the side built valuable partnerships at the top of the order to make the runs with 13 overs to spare.

An unbeaten 34 from captain Dale Steele and 48 from Kyle Stallan sealed the win.

"We were able to grab a few early wickets and maintain pressure early," Steele said.

"The boys then did well to score a total we usually get week in and week out."

The side was then has their finals hopes boosted when The Waves beat Brothers by 66 runs.

Now just 5.5 points separate Past Highs from third-placed Brothers with one round to go.

And if they win this week against Norths, and Brothers lose to The Waves, they could move to third.

But Steele wasn't confident about their chances.

"It would take a miracle for us to make it," he said.

"It's the toughest game of the round and they haven't been beaten all year.

Steele's point was validated on Saturday when Norths maintained their 18-game unbeaten run with a three-wicket win over The Waves.

The side chased down 180 with six overs to go.

The Waves opener Michael Loader said his side didn't make enough runs.

"Our lower order should have helped us make over 200," he said.

"We're on the right track though against Norths but we didn't finish it off.

"We're still confident of beating them in the finals."

The final round of action will be held this Saturday.
