Doctors take on Dr Google with new website

BUNDABERG residents are being urged to boost their health literacy with the help of a new website.

A group of Australia's most respected medical academics, clinicians and entrepreneurs has launched a new website called Health&.

The aim is to teach Australians about vital health issues and support healthy living.

Health& Medical Advisory Board chairman Professor Leon Piterman said it was important people were given the tools they needed to safely navigate health information online and to ensure they were presented with balanced, credible sources.

"It is encouraging to see people taking an active interest in learning and communicating about their health online - we know that Dr Google and Professor Wikipedia are working 24 hours a day," he said.

"As the appetite for health information continues to grow, it's important for us to educate and empower our communities to source information that supports good health.

"That's why we've created Health& - a resource built by Australians, for Australians, which they can trust to deliver information they understand."

Prof Piterman said the website covered 400 topics so far - including immunisation, acne, and healthy eating.

"The library is vast and varied, but this is only just the beginning," he said.
