Disqualified driver was on her way to see parole officer

A TOOWOOMBA woman was caught driving while disqualified on her way to report to her parole officer, the city's Magistrates Court heard.

Debra Ann Murarenko was pulled over by a police patrol while driving on Herries St about 11.30am, December 19, the court heard.

Police checks of the 52-year-old's driver's licence found she had been disqualified from driving by the court on June 29, last year, and that her car's registration had expired nine days earlier, police prosecutor Senior Constable Julie Wheaton told the court.

The self-represented Murarenko pleaded guilty to charges of driving while disqualified by court order and to driving an unregistered vehicle.

She conceded she knew she shouldn't have been driving but hadn't realised the car's registration had expired.

Murarenko told the court she had been pulled over while on her way to report to her parole officer.

She said she had been afraid of getting into trouble had she missed the appointment with her parole officer and, having no credit left on her mobile phone and having no-one available to take her, had decided to drive herself.

"On that day I made a very poor decision," she told the court.

She told Magistrate Damian Carroll she had not driven the car since that day and would not drive it again while disqualified.

"I just wish I hadn't driven it that day," she submitted.

Mr Carroll noted Murarenko had been sentenced to three months in jail with immediate parole at her last court appearance.

Mr Carroll fined her $800 and disqualified her from holding or obtaining a driver's licence for the mandatory two years.
