Derailed train kills 22, injures over 70 in India

AT LEAST 22 people have been killed and more than 70 injured in a train derailment north of the Indian capital, New Delhi.

Local media reported that up to 14 coaches of the high-speed Utkal Express jumped the rails near Khatauli, in Uttar Pradesh state, about 5.45pm local time on Saturday, with one crashing into a house adjacent to the track.

Rescue squads and sniffer dog squads were rushed to the scene and assisted by locals in rescue operations that went deep into the night.

Heavyweight cranes and gas cutters were used to lift displaced and overturned coaches and cut through their tangled remains.

Rescuers and local people worked into the night searching for survivors.

India has the world's fourth biggest rail network and crashes are common due to poor maintenance of the vast network.

It is at the fourth major passenger train derailment in India this year.

In January in southern Andhra Pradesh state a derailment killed 39 and injured 50.

A crash in November in Uttar Pradesh killed 150.
