Defending champions make perfect start

GOLF: Last year's winners of the Burnett Cup believe they can go all the way again this year.

And after the first weekend of competition it would be hard to argue against them.

Continuing where they left off last year, Cam McFarlane and Neil Weston won in round one over Dave Gordon and Dave Lett by five shots with four holes to go.

Leading by two shots after the first two holes, they were never threatened in perfect conditions.

"We combined well and hit very well,” McFarlane said.

"Our opposition fought back well but we did enough to win.”

Unknown to McFarlane at the time was that win gave the duo a free passage into round three.

While the other combinations played round two on Sunday, the defending champions received the bye.

"Neil was told at the Calcutta on Friday but I didn't know,” he said.

"It was a bonus but I was actually looking forward to a hit on Sunday.”

Now into round three they will face Darren Anderson and Wayne Olsen for a spot in the quarter-finals.

McFarlane said they were confident of success.

"The key to our wins is Neil and I keep encouraging each other,” he said.

"We also have a confident mindset to do well.”

In other results, it was a good weekend for Bundaberg Golf Club president Geoff Loveday and the club's head PGA professional, Craig Swift.

Both are also into the third round with their partners.

The third round of the competition will be held this Saturday with the ladies competition also starting this weekend.

The draw for that competition will be available tomorrow.
