Dalton prepares for Brisbane race
Speedway: Dalton Nilsen knows what he wants to find under the Christmas Tree next Friday morning.
It is not a Nintendo Wii or a new iPhone.
This 13-year-old wants a brand-new 350cc motorbike he can race in Brisbane.
In his first year in the solo speedway scene, Dalton has been rising up the ranks in the 125cc category.
Next year marks the first season Dalton can hop aboard a 350cc flyer.
And the C-Grade rider cannot hide his excitement at the prospect.
“They are so much faster and more powerful than the 125cc, it’ll take some time to get used to,” he said.
“But I’m sure I’ll be able to adjust.”
It certainly did not take Dalton too long to adjust to the 125cc bike and he continually improved during the year.
By the time he finished his last race, in Nudgee recently, he was king of the dirt.
“He got a first place in the final race of the season, which is a good way to end the year,” his mother, Donna, said.
Most mums would be against their sons cutting the tracks on a speedy motorbike, but not Donna.
“It keeps him focused and I know where he is,” she said.
“He isn’t around getting into trouble.”
By joining the speedway circuit, Dalton has also entered a tight community that travels to Brisbane regularly to take on their city rivals.
“They’re all really close mates and they’re always riding together and mucking around,” Donna said.
Even she does not know about Dalton’s chances of getting a 350cc bike before Christmas.
“They are pretty hard to pick up locally. You usually have to get them in from overseas,” she said.
“He’s pretty excited about turning 14 so he will be able to ride one though.”
