Dad and son in court over drugs

A FATHER and son would hang a tea towel out the front of their house to indicate their drug dealing business was open for trade, an Ipswich court has been told.

An intensive four-day covert police operation saw 80 people pop in and out to purchase drugs at the home of John Herbert Faulkner, 63, at Redbank Plains during July and August.

His son, David John Faulkner, 35, would help out with selling the cannabis when he was there and receive a commission of drugs to fuel his own habit.

Police had been watching the home over a couple of months and executed a search warrant on August 26, where officers found almost $1600 in cash and an amount of cannabis.

The Faulkner pair told police they had won the cash from a casino and the cannabis was for personal use only.

Ipswich District Court heard police observed 79 customers dealing from the home over a four-day period, with most buyers opting to buy a "stick" - or $25 worth.

Defence barrister Steve Kissick said David Faulkner, the son, was the "cadet or lance corporal" of the operation and merely assisted his father's trade while visiting.

Mr Kissick said the son made no profit from the dealings beside a quantity of cannabis for personal use, which fuelled his long-standing cannabis addiction.

Both men pleaded guilty to drug trafficking.

In addition the father, John Faulkner, pleaded guilty to supplying and possessing dangerous drugs and receiving or possessing property related to drugs.

Judge Sarah Bradley sentenced him to three years and six months in prison, suspended after 12 months, taking into account the 111 days he had already served in custody and his early plea of guilty.

He will be released on parole on August 25.

Son David was sentenced to two years prison and released on immediate parole.
