Crystal Jones joins race for Division 10
BUNDABERG'S Crystal Jones has announced she will run as a candidate for Division 10 in the upcoming Bundaberg Regional Council elections.
The 31-year-old journalist and online editor said through her work she had been strongly connected to the Bundaberg community and was inspired to make an effort in representing the division in which she lives.
"I'm proud to have called Bundaberg home since 1999," she said.
"Because I live here and because I appreciate the region for all that it is, I wanted to put my heart, soul and integrity into doing my best for it."
Miss Jones said she would take a practical approach to local government.
"It's easy to get people's hopes up and promise the earth, but what I will promise is open communication, realistic goals and a down-to-earth straightforward approach to making Bundaberg the best it can be," she said.
"It's about getting back to basics - the pathways, traffic problems and lighting issues in Division 10 we deal with every single day. If a councillor doesn't look after those things, who will?"
"It's time to raise the bar."
Miss Jones said she believed the most effective formula for a strong local government was a combination of old fashioned dedication and modern innovation.
"We should never be afraid of looking to the future, because the spirit that exists in Bundaberg will remain forever no matter what," she said.
"That is why if there is something on the cards that involves better industry, better business or better jobs - so long as there are no overly detrimental consequences - I'll back it with all my might.
"I'm excited about charging up our tourism industry, addressing public parking concerns and looking into innovative ways to bring wealth to our city."
Miss Jones said she came to love Bundaberg after finishing her studies at the city's CQUniversity campus and carving out a career in the rum city.
As for her other interests, Miss Jones said she enjoyed spending time outdoors with family and friends as well as working and volunteering teaching English and being involved in various fundraisers over the years.
She is also in the process of obtaining a masters degree in international relations but has put this on hold for now to focus on the council.
Editor's note: Miss Jones is on leave from the NewsMail during her campaign and will resign from her role if she is successful in the election.
