Crook targets old Bundy rum
A MAN who stole four bottles of 10-year-old Bundaberg rum and cigarettes from the Tattersalls Hotel was sentenced to 18 months' jail yesterday.
Bruce Peter King, 19, of Avenell Heights, pleaded guilty to unlawful entry of a vehicle, breaching his bail, assault causing bodily harm, two charges of breaking and entering and three charges of stealing.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Barry Stevens said on March 21, King removed the louvres at the Tattersalls Hotel before climbing through the opening.
Sgt Stevens said King took four bottles of 10-year-old Bundaberg rum and some packets of Longbeach cigarettes with a total value of $339.
Sgt Stevens said on two occasions between March 1 and 5, King went to the Bundaberg Blockbuster store and took a DVD from its case and put it in his pocket.
Sgt Stevens said King had also broken into a home and car in Toowoomba and stolen a laptop, mobile phone, modem and tobacco.
The court heard on another occasion, King punched a security guard who had asked him to leave a Toowoomba supermarket.
Defence lawyer Simon Burgess asked for a pre-sentence custody report to be prepared, saying King had a “rather unfortunate childhood”.
The matter was adjourned to May 5
