Elderly man found dead after Oakey pub fight named
UPDATE 3.15PM: The man found dead after an alleged fight in an Oakey pub carpark on Wednesday has been identified as local resident Calvin Smith.
Mr Smith, 82, died after a verbal fight turned physical in the carpark of the Bernborough Tavern in Oakey shortly after 2pm yesterday.
"It would appear that there was some assault in regards to one of the patrons," Darling Downs Detective Inspector Dave Isherwood said.
"It is believed the deceased person has died as a result of the altercation but until we confirm that through post-mortem examinations, inquiries are still continuing."
Detectives are reviewing CCTV footage in an effort to piece together the moments leading up to the alleged fight to determine the chain of events.
THURSDAY 10.30AM: The crime scene established at the Bernborough Tavern yesterday afternoon has been removed as Oakey residents react to the death of a man after an alleged altercation.
Residents told The Chronicle they were shocked and saddened at the news of the local man's death.
Police were called to the venue on the town's main street, just two doors up from the Oakey station, about 2pm on Wednesday.
The man was pronounced deceased at the scene.
6PM: The Bernborough Tavern in Oakey remains a crime scene as police investigate the death of a man this afternoon.
Initial investigations suggest a man, 82, was involved in an argument in the Bernborough Tavern carpark about 2pm with another man.
Police said initial investigations suggested the man has fallen over during the argument, and suffered serious head injuries as a result of the fall.
He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
A man, believed to be 73, is assisting police with inquiries.

BREAKING: Police are investigating the death of a man outside an Oakey pub this afternoon.
Police were called to the Bernborough Tavern about 2pm where a man, 82, was found dead.
Another man, believed to be 73, is assisting police with inquiries.
The area has been declared a crime scene with Criminal Investigation Branch detectives, Scenes of Crime officers and scientific police at the pub.
Police will investigate whether the two men, who were known to each other, were involved in a fight in the car park before the older man died.
