Craft passion made Avatar babies

ARTIST Racheal Ambler has never watched the movie Avatar but it hasn't stopped her from creating blue Na'vi babies in hon- our of the film.

The Na'vi were the native inhabitants of the planet Pandora, which was the setting for the 2009 film Avatar.

"I personally haven't seen the movie but I have had it on in the background and I used stills to help with the creations," Mrs Ambler said.

The idea to make Na'vi babies was first suggested to her about a year ago by a friend who wanted one.

"I noticed a few were being sold on eBay by other artists so I thought I would give it a go," she said.

"As soon as I put my first ones up on Facebook I had eight people emailing me for the Na'vi babies."

Mrs Ambler has been making babies for about two years after a passion for craft turned into a baby-making obsession.

"I have been at this for about two year and made 140 babies," she said.

"I wanted to try something different, something in fantasy."

The Na'vi babies give Mr Ambler a different challenge.

"I actually have to use sculpture clay to form the nose and ears. I also hand-sculpt the tail," she said.

"The markings of the babies are not the same as in the movie. Each Na'vi has unique markings anyway."

Mrs Ambler said all the babies were hard to "adopt" away because they reminded her of her own three children.

"They (Na'vi babies) are harder to let go of because they were harder to create," she said.

"I just adore the little girl. The girl is a bit bigger as well.

"I am very keen to get on and make them again."

But for now, Mrs Ambler said she was going to take a short break from making the Na'vi babies as she prepares for a doll show in Brisbane in June.
