CQ town plummets to 3.6 degrees as cold snap sweeps region

PARTS of the Mackay and Coalfields regions are shivering through a cold start to the day with temperatures dropping as low as 3.6 degrees in some areas.

While the coldest official Mackay temperature was 11.8 at the Mackay Racecourse weather station at 6.40am, temperatures were a lot colder to the west.

Residents of Clermont have been delivered a 3.6 degree start to the day while those in Moranbah are waking up to an 8.2 degree low. To the north, there a low of 13.2 degrees was recorded at Proserpine.

It won't stay cold for long though, with temperatures forecast to reach highs between 24-26 across the four towns.

The cool change is being driven by a dry and static synoptic pattern.

"A weak surface trough lies over central eastern Queensland and will move slowly northeastwards over the coming days, moving off the central coast today," Bureau of Meteorology forecasters said.

"A strong, slow-moving high pressure system over the Great Australian Bight will maintain a ridge and stable conditions across much of the state in the wake of the trough. This dry and static synoptic pattern will lead to cool nights and morning frosts across inland districts."
