Cousins make it to the big 100... and 101
NOEL Virgil (Boy) Schmidt will have good reason to celebrate as he turns 101 on July 24.
He is not the only family member to reach this grand age.
Noel's cousin, Albert William (Bill) Schmidt, also turned 100 earlier this year.
Local historian Scott Stedman, who is related to both men, was proud of his family tree and hoped he would make it to 100 himself.
"My two cousins have 200 years of life experiences between them," Mr Stedman said.
Born in 1914, Noel and Bill (born 1915) both attended Doolbi State School in the early 1920s.
Noel has lived all his life in the Isis region, as a cane farmer.
As for Bill, at the age of 25 he immigrated to New Zealand.
He went on to serve in the New Zealand Army during the Second World War.
He returned to Australia in 1986 to be reunited with Noel.
Today, Noel resides at Forest View Hostel and Bill lives with his daughter and son-in-law in Hervey Bay.
