Court mention for man charged with murdering stepdaughter

A NSW man charged with the murder of his stepdaughter has had his matter mentioned briefly in court.

The man, 31, who cannot be named for legal reasons, did not make an appearance on Thursday at Maitland Local Court.

He did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.

The girl, 12, was found dead on Wednesday morning in her bed at the family home at Aberglasslyn in the Hunter Valley.

The man was arrested two hours later in Rutherford after fleeing in the family car after the girl's mother discovered her body.

Police are investigating whether the girl was assaulted the previous night before being sent to bed.

She is the 64th person to be killed in Australia this year apparently at the hands of a partner or family member.

The man is due to appear in court again on October 7.
