PCYC Multiplex could generate millions for economy: Dempsey

COUNCILLORS will decide whether to support funding applications to the state and federal governments for Stage 2 of the PCYC Multiplex at next week's ordinary meeting.

Stage 1 of the multi-purpose facility received State Government help of $5 million through the Building our Regions program.

The total cost of Stage 1 was $14.5 million.

Cash reserves from the sale of council assets such as the PCYC, Norville Hall and a childcare centre were put towards the project.

Mayor Jack Dempsey said while it would be great to see completion of Stage 2, council's financial position would need to be considered.

"We have the aspirational target of Stage 2 but as was brought up in the meeting a number of times, there are a number of other priorities right across the region regarding rates, roads, rubbish and drainage," he said.

Cr Dempsey said the economic benefits of completing Stage 2 could be in the vicinity of $35 million.

"That's not just on construction but the flow on from events (and) accommodation," he said.

"We see it as a project that stacks up but we want to make sure we get the best use of ratepayers' funding."

Councillor Helen Blackburn said while she was excited by the potential of the Multiplex she was mindful ratepayers' wanted minimal increases to rates.

"We need to make sure that we're balancing what the ratepayer expectation is with what is best for our region," he said.
