Council warns about ATO scams in North Burnett
NORTH Burnett Regional Council has warned residents about tax scams circulating in the region.
The scams involve an email or phone call out of the blue from someone claiming to be the Australian Tax Office.
The target of the scam is told they are entitled to a refund, owe money or need to confirm, update or disclose confidential details like a tax file number.
The council said residents who received this should delete the email, or hang up the phone.
You can verify the caller or sender by contacting the ATO on its official contact number, 1800008540.
According to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, more than 300 Australians have already lost more than $1 million to this scam in 2016.
Australians have lost more than $41 million to scams this year.
Report suspected ATO email scams by forwarding the original email to ReportEmailFraud@ato.gov.au or by visiting the Scamwatch website.
