Cops tackle online child exploitation to keep kids safe

TECHNOLOGY is constantly evolving; so too are the opportunities for predators take advantage of children in the online world.

This week officers from the Sunshine Coast District Child Protection and Investigative Unit will update their tech skills with world leaders in keeping kids safe.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dan Purdie will be among hundreds from across the world at the International Youth Technology and Virtual Communities Conference on the Gold Coast, where the focus will be on combating child exploitation.

"Every day, every week there's a new app, a new social media platform and as police we need to stay on top of that to try and combat predators out there who will look at them to try and prey on our kids," he said.

"The issues we've got with technology, social media and online media is something that happens across the state and it's certainly something that we're aware of on the Sunshine Coast and we're working to keep on top of that."

Experts from across the globe will be sharing their best-practice learnings alongside Queensland's own CPIU.

"Our Taskforce Argos is renowned globally for being leaders in the field of child protection, particularly in the field of online offending," Det Snr Sgt Purdie said.

The conference will look at how to prevent and deal with human trafficking and travelling sex offenders and the production, supply and circulation of child exploitation material via social media.

The police do what they can to protect Sunshine Coast kids, but Det Snr Sgt Purdie said parents should to try and stay up to date with technology too.

"Know what social media and what chat groups your kids are engaged in so you're across what they're doing and teach them the skills to try and identify predators online," he said.
