Community voice speaks out to save its radio station

FOR 16 years the voices of our community have found a place to share their thoughts, connect with others and play their favourite tunes.

But all that could be a thing of the past as the Coral Coast Community Radio 94.7FM struggles to secure adequate sponsorship to cover its running costs.

Station president Robert Modrow said the not-for-profit group relied on local businesses for support.

"We provide advertising for their sponsorship because as a not-for-profit organisation we don't get handouts from the government," he said.

"There are certain grants that we can get but with those grants you can only buy capital assets like chairs and tables, you can't put them towards running costs for things like rent and electricity bills.

"We've been going for 16 years and Bundaberg businesses have supported us really well in the past but since the two lots of floods that have gone through, they haven't got as much spare money as they'd like and we are suffering from that as well."

Mr Modrow said the radio station played an important role and it would be a shame to see it fold after 16 years.

"It's a totally different set up from main stream media," he said.

"We've got almost 50 presenters who are volunteers as well and members of the organisation from all parts of the community. It's virtually the community's voice.

"It's a platform for the normal community person to get on air and play their music and talk on their views and it would be a shame if that would have to go because then it would just be the commercial stations doing all the network stuff."

Mr Modrow said the station also provided an outlet for other not-for-profit community groups.

"We do have a vision impaired member who does a radio program - so it gives groups like that an opportunity to have their voice on air as well," he said.

"Because our community is a multi-cultural community, we give them an outlet too so all areas are represented. And also the youth, so the youth have a voice in the community."

Mr Modrow said advertising on the station was extremely cheap compared to commercial stations.

"They can take advantage of very cheap advertising and in giving us that sponsorship dollar, the funds stay local and support the people who support them," he said.
