Community fights flab together

IT'S no secret that Bundaberg has earned a reputation as the "fat capital", and people are quick to point out the unflattering figures wherever you go.

FAT CAPITAL GETTING SLIMMER

We earned, if you'd call it that, the label in September 2012 when the Adelaide University Public Health Information Development Unit released the statistics that one in four people in the region was seriously overweight - the most of any local government area in Australia.

And while the tagline isn't one to be proud of, our community's response to the news certainly was.

From the Move It Campaign launched by Impact, the council and YMCA, to the opening of several new gyms and bootcamp operations, there was a concerted effort to make sure people had plenty of opportunities to make healthier choices.

The expansion of City Fit is another positive step in the right direction with the gym making room for more members, equipment and classes.

While we may still have a long way to go, we're certainly headed in the right direction if the old saying of "build it and they will come" is anything to go by.
