Comedy misses the mark in White House Down
Movie: White House Down
Reviewer: Joseph Akers
Run time: 130 minutes
Verdict: This party goes "down" when comedy hits the "house"
Joeden stars: 2.75 out of 5
WHITE House Down stars popular 'hot-head' Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx.
White House Down is directed by Roland Emmerich who directed one of the worst films of all time - 2012 - which was a three-hour fake snooze-fest.
White House Down is written by James Vanderbilt who wrote The Amazing Spider-Man which I honestly think is better than the original Spider-Man and the disappointing Spider-Man 3, though Spider-Man 2 was just a tad bit better.
Judging from the Amazing Spider-Man, James Vanderbilt is a character writer, and that definitely shows in this film.
He sets the first half-hour setting up the bond between Tatum and his daughter played by Joey King (He is a little young to be a dad to an 11-year-old, isn't he?).
This bond definitely builds throughout the film well. Though, when things start happening in the White House, the story just starts derailing quickly, and we are stuck with… a comedy?!
Yes, I am about as confused as you.
A story about people invading the White House and it turns into a comedy?
The jokes fail, and have no substance whatsoever. I laughed twice and there are possibly 15-20 failed jokes.
The action sequences are good - though rely on noticeable CGI and green screen effects.
When Channing Tatum was kicking butt, it was pretty cool to watch (when the effects didn't get in the middle of it).
Don't get me wrong, there were times when the effects worked, but mostly the effects aren't very consistent and look very dated.
For an example, the film has several occasions when helicopters fly by, and it looks as if the filmmakers didn't even try to make it look the slightest bit realistic.
Channing Tatum is a fine comedy actor, but it's Roland Emmerich's Michael Bay style humour, which makes this film fell unrealistic and bland. Michael Bay has directed the Transformers trilogy… and we know how terrible those jokes were... these jokes are similar.
Though, I think the two times I laughed were at Jamie Foxx, that guy should try to get into comedy (if a good script is available).
These guys are capable action stars, so, there performances are top notch for the genre.
This movie is enjoyable to watch despite its flaws.
It's certainly not the worst film of the year, not even close! But in saying that, it's not the best.
A lot of people will enjoy this and have time if they don't dive into the special effects and comedy too much.
The music is fantastic with a fast paced score. This movie is 130 minutes, and only needs to be 100 minutes.
Though, if your looking for a fun movie with a good musical score and terrific action acting, White House Down is your film.
Though if you are looking for a brilliant special effected film with a fantastic comedy, White House Down is sure to disappoint.
