Toowoomba comedian becomes big hit on The Project

TOOWOOMBA comedian Damien Power is preparing for his most thought-provoking and hilarious show yet.

Mr Power has come a long way from the boy who once played up in classrooms to having his own segment "Power to the People" on current affairs program The Project.

He's preparing for his eighth Brisbane Comedy Festival in March where he will perform his new show Utopia.

"It's a funny, well thought-out show that's loosely about utopia; the idea of fantasy and dreams and idealised notions of how society should run and how we see the world," he said.

Mr Power has been a powerhouse in the comedy scene for 12 years and frequently returns to Toowoomba.

While work takes him to Melbourne more often than not, he is based in Brisbane with his seven-year-old son Patrick.

Mr Power decided to pursue comedy in this early 20s after graduating in information technology at university.

"I was always into funny stuff in primary school but it was more like getting in trouble with teachers," he laughed.

"It wasn't professional, I was getting kicked out of classrooms.

"I had no idea it could do it as a job so I kind of lost all that when I went on a detour and studied IT.

"It wasn't until I graduated that I looked at doing other stuff, I guess becoming a student of film, and television acting that's where I could see it as a thing to do."

While Mr Power enjoys sharing television screens with some of the best in the industry, he will always have a soft spot for stand-up comedy.

"Stand-up is something I always do when I'm not doing other stuff like television and web series," he said.

"The one thing I've learnt is that there's no short cut.

"The only way you're really going to succeed is to have an entire hour of solid stand-up to build the rapport and a variety of audiences.

"It's a long road of trial and error and it's that thought process that will get you there."

Mr Power also plans to tour America, Amsterdam, Malaysia and the United Kingdom soon.
