AUSTRALIA Zoo's four new meerkats have finally been named, after thousands of suggestions from across Australia.

The four mischievous female meerkats have been making themselves at home on the Sunshine Coast since they arrived at the zoo on September 16, and the naming of the meerkats was put to the public in a competition run by Compare the Market.

The winning names announced on Tuesday.

The meerkat family's matriarch has taken the name of Molly, while her three daughters have been named Maya, Katia and Matilda.

Meerkat-lovers around the country sent in names during the two-week competition, with the winners from Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria given the opportunity to "adopt" the meerkat they named.

The winning names were chosen based on how well they suited the individual characteristics of the meerkats and the creative reason behind each suggestion.

Molly, Maya, Katia and Matilda are now on display at the Australia Zoo's meerkat enclosure in the Africa zone.

Australia Zoo's new meerkat section is now officially open and the mob are perched and ready to meet guests.
