Coast's dancing duo take out world championships

TWO Sunshine Coast dancers have put the Sunshine Coast on the world stage, taking out a major prize in a global competition.

Lovisa Hart, 37, and Caleb Michael-Smith, 34, took first place in the Salsa Couples Division in the World Salsa Solo Dance Championships in the US at the weekend.

The pair had only been training together for four months, and neither had won any similar championships before.

Ms Hart had danced her whole life, but had been training seriously in salsa and cha-cha for a year when she started to look for a dancing partner.

"We've been in the Latin dancing scene on the Sunshine Coast, which is a really tight-knit family," she said.

"We'd love to go for the next level and train for it again."

Ms Hart recently launched her own Latin dance studio, Latin HQ, in Mooloolaba and said she was excited about the future of Latin dance on the Sunshine Coast.

"Latin dancers here are hungry to develop their dancing and if I can facilitate that by providing a funky studio space and the best teachers... who knows what other titles we can take out."

The studio is just the latest business Ms Hart has run, but Latin HQ is a true passion project.

"I'm a retired entrepreneur living part two of my life," she said.

"I've run companies since I was 14 years old and missed out on a lot of fun... now at 37 I'm filling in the gaps."

She said part of her drive came from suggestions the Sunshine Coast's ageing population made it a "bunch of old numpties".

"When I heard this statement my belly was filled with fire and I trained harder, longer and stronger," she said.

"The best revenge is always to strive towards excellence."
