Abandoned chemicals thought to be for agricultural use

UPDATE 4PM: Firefighters believe the chemicals which caused a Rosemount property to be isolated are mostly for agricultural use.

Queensland Fire and Rescue Service chemical experts have been at the Petrie Creek Rd site since 11am working to identify the substances abandoned in a cooler bin.

A spokesman said everything tested so far was either off-coloured water or sulphur-based chemicals.

The chemicals had been deemed no threat to the public.

He said the road remained closed however while the testing continued.

No properties have been evacuated.

EARLIER: A property has been isolated, roads closed and residents warned to stay away from the area of a suspicious chemical find.

Specialist chemical analysts from Brisbane are currently testing the chemicals found at a Petrie Creek Rd property at Rosemount - between Nambour and Bli Bli on the Sunshine Coast - about 8.50am Tuesday.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said crews were alerted via a 000 call to a pungent chemical smell coming from a cooler bin on the vacant block of land.

"It's got what appears to be abandoned chemicals inside," the spokesman said.

He said the specialist chemical crew arrived about 11am.

"They are testing chemicals."

A safe zone has been set up around the property but he said no one had been evacuated at this stage.

Police have closed Petrie Creek Rd in both directions.

They have advised cars travelling from Nambour on Howard St will be turned around.

Others are being diverted through Panorama Dr.
