Coal seam gas company axes Darling Downs jobs

A COAL seam gas company has axed several jobs as low oil prices take their toll on gas and mining projects on the Darling Downs.

Origin Energy is understood to have laid off 17 staff from projects across the Surat Basin.

An Origin representative said the job cuts were part of a nationwide workforce reduction.

"This would see a reduction of 800 roles nationwide, with most expected to come from metro city locations," they said.

"We are also continuing with a program announced a year ago to remove $1bn in costs as the Australia Pacific LNG construction phase winds down and transitions to operations.

"This has led to some staff reductions in regional centres where we operate such as Miles and Chinchilla; however, we will maintain our local presence and continue to offer incentives for permanent employees to live locally."
