Clubs offer to bowl over travellers

THE Burnett Bowls Club is the latest group to support an initiative to bring locals and backpackers together through a series of social events.

The NewsMail first covered the proposal after Bargara man Keith Wilson envisioned a way to help Bundaberg improve its image among international travellers.

Burnett Bowls Club chairman Ken Gear believes the initiative is a great thing for Bundaberg.

"I think it's a good idea," he said.

"The backpackers are strangers to town and they would be quite welcome at our club.

"We'd be keen to get them on the green for a game of bowls."

Mr Gear said the club would be happy to make the event a weekly occurrence.

"We'd like to invite them to a social game of bowls on Sunday afternoons.

"It would be good to see them at the club every Sunday afternoon for a couple of hours," Mt Gear said.

"An event could also be organised in the late afternoon or early evening under the lights."

Mr Gear said if they could get a few backpackers interested then hopefully the numbers would grow.
