Civil unions undermine values: MP

A MOVE to allow same-sex civil unions has been labelled "kooky social engineering" and "a publicity stunt" by Fraser Coast MPs.

Both Member for Maryborough Chris Foley and Member for Hervey Bay Ted Sorensen voted against the introduction of the Civil Partnerships Bill at parliament on Tuesday night, but the bill was eventually introduced after MPs voted 46 to 30 in favour.

Maryborough MP Mr Foley said he was morally opposed to the bill, saying it was the first step to introducing gay marriage, and undermining traditional values.

"It is kooky social engineering," Mr Foley said.

"While I will forever defend the right of people to live as they choose, gay or straight, I believe that the more we have moved away from the traditional family unit, the more chaotic society has become."

Member for Hervey Bay Ted Sorensen said the bill was being used as a political distraction from more serious issues.

"If they really wanted to deal with the issue properly, they would have introduced it 12 months ago," he said.

If the bill is voted in, it will acknowledge the relationship rights of gay and lesbian couples as far as possible under state legislation, however, gay marriage remains a federal issue. While Labor MPs will be allowed a conscience vote, LNP members must follow party lines and vote against the bill.
