Cities hold on against All Blacks
CITIES overcame a host of challenges to grind out a 2-1 victory over the re-born All Blacks in the match of the round on a chilly Saturday night at Hinkler Park.
Missing regular goalkeeper Brendan Weller, as well as a host of regular starters, it was always going to be tough for the defending champions.
It looked like the task would be too much when All Blacks slipped one through Cities’ penalty corner defence early in the first half.
But a well-executed drag flick to Joel Latham - a deserved result after sustained pressure - put them back on even terms.
A stifled Josh Stacey drag flick got past the All Blacks’ goalkeeper’s pads early in the second half to put Cities in front and they held on until the final whistle.
Stand in goalkeeper Ryan Shelley made some crucial late saves to retain Cities’ lead, while the old heads of Peter McLellan and Dave Latham were invaluable.
Cities women had a more comfortable 8-1 win against Raiders, while Rovers women went down 4-0 to Arrows Athletics.
A double to Colby Zahn helped Rovers’ men turn the tables on Arrows Athletics to win 4-0. Josh Crowe and Ryan Lee were the other scorers.
