Christopher Hitchens dies aged 62

INFLUENTIAL journalist, writer, and political thinker, Christopher Hitchens, died today aged 62 after losing his battle with cancer.

Hitchens was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in 2010 only a month into a book tour to promote his memoirs.

Best known for his 2007 book God is not great: How religion poisons everything, his career as an author and journalist spanned four decades including stints at The Atlantic, Vanity Fair, Slate, World Affairs, The Nation, Free Inquiry, and as a journalist for several British newspapers.

His list of friends includes the likes of Salman Rushdie, Martin Amis, and Ian McEwen.

Hitchens died surrounded by friends and family at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.
