Chris Hemsworth to reprise Star Trek role

CHRIS Hemsworth will reprise his Star Trek character in the next film opposite Chris Pine.

Two days before the release of the third film in JJ Abrams' reboot series, Star Trek Beyond, Paramount Pictures has confirmed a fourth film will be produced by Abrams and will see Pine's Captain Kirk somehow cross paths with his father George Kirk.

Hemsworth played the cameo role in Abrams' first Star Trek film in 2009, only appearing in the opening scene of the film which depicted George Kirk's infamous death on the day of his son's birth.

Fans are already coming up with theories about how his deceased character could return, including time travel, suspended animation, artificial intelligence and cloning - all of which could be possible with the technologies available in Star Trek's cinematic universe.

Star Trek is one of three sci-fi franchises currently banking on Hemsworth's star power.

He is currently filming Thor: Ragnarok on the Gold Coast with Kiwi director Taika Waititi and he is the surprise hit of the new all-female Ghostbusters reboot.

The remaining Star Trek cast, including Zachary Quinto, John Cho and Zoe Saldana, is also expected to return.

JD Payne and Patrick McKay will write the screenplay, while Abrams and Lindsey Weber will produce through Bad Robot Productions. David Ellison and Dana Goldberg of Skydance will executive produce.

It is unclear if Lin will return to direct.

In other Star Trek news, Netflix today also announced it will screen CBS's new Star Trek TV series into 188 countries including Australia.

The new Star Trek series will begin production in Toronto in September for a January 2017 premiere.

The franchise's return to the small screen will include a new ship and new characters.

Alex Kurtzman and Bryan Fuller will helm the new series. Fuller launched his career writing on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager, while Kurtzman was co-writer and producer of the big-screen reboots Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness.
