Friend gets through to next round

CHRIS Friend is through to the second round of the ASP 4 Star Hainan Classic in China, but fellow Sunshine Coast surfer Dane Bird has fallen at the first hurdle.

Friend was slow out of the blocks but eventually won his heat convincingly after posting 14.60 out of a possible 20.

Halfway through the 30-minute heat he was in last place, but an 8.17 ride catapulted him up the rankings and a 6.43 was enough to get him into first and the round of 32.

"At first I was just hassling with the other guys and on my first wave I had the wobbles and fell," Friend said. "I waited about 10 minutes and by the time that first set came through I was freezing, I was shivering. But luckily I was able to put a couple of turns together and get a score."

Bird finished third in his heat, scoring 10.93 out of 20, behind Brazil's Messias Felix (17.40) and Australian-turned Irishman Glenn Hall (16.50).
