Girl, 3, who nearly drowned expected to make full recovery

THE three-year-old girl who nearly drowned in a Pialba pool is expected to make a full recovery.

Detective Sergeant Melonie Geck from the Maryborough Police District Child Protection and Investigation unit said the toddler was expected to be released from hospital in Brisbane on Tuesday.

Ambulances were called to a gated housing complex in Pialba just after 7pm on Sunday when the child was found at the bottom of a pool and after being taken to Hervey Bay Hospital, was flown to Brisbane in a critical condition.

This latest near-drowning follows the death of a two-year-old girl who was pulled unconscious from a dam at Sunshine Acres on January 11.

Founding director of Hannah's Foundation, a drowning prevention and family support service, Andrew Plint said now was the time for sympathy and awareness.

"Our hearts go out to the family of the young girl and the community," he said.

"Tragedies like this can occur so quickly and it needs to be understood that even in the most active environments, supervision is always the key goal for any parent."

Circumstances are still unclear as to how the child found her way into the pool and Mr Plint said supervision was the best way to prevent a drowning or near-drowning from happening.
