Chelsea stays clear at top despite dropped points

FOOTBALL: Tottenham and Arsenal failed to capitalise on dropped points by English Premier League leader Chelsea at the top of the ladder.

Spurs drew 0-0 at relegation-threatened Sunderland, while Arsenal lost 2-1 at home to Watford.

Chelsea could have picked up all three points at Liverpool but Diego Costa had his penalty saved by Simon Mignolet and the Blues had to settle for a point in a 1-1 draw at Anfield.

Mignolet made up for earlier being caught off guard by a quickly taken David Luiz free-kick by going down low to huis right to keep out Costa's spot kick.

Georginio Wijnaldum's close-range header had earlier levelled the scores in the 57th minute as Liverpool avoided a fourth consecutive home defeat in all competitions.

Chelsea is now nine points clear of Tottenham in second place with the Gunners in third following their shock home loss.

Watford scored twice inside the first 13 minutes through Younes Kaboul and Troy Deeney and was able to hold out despite Alex Iwobi scoring with 30 minutes remaining.

Champion Leicester City's relegation worries are becoming increasingly more desperate after Claudio Ranieri's side was defeated 1-0 at Burnley thanks to a late goal from Welsh international Sam Vokes.

Leicester is just two points off the relegation zone in 16th place following wins for SWansea City and Crystal Palace.

Swansea defeated Southampton 2-1 at the Liberty Stadium to draw level on points with the Foxes.

The Swans are now only behind Leicester and Middlesbrough on goal difference after goals from Alfie Mawson and Gylfi Sigurdsson secured a second straight win.

Third-bottom Palace won in the league for the first time under new manager Sam Allardyce with goals from Scott Dann and Christian Benteke helping the Eagles to a 2-0 success at Bournemouth.

Middlesbrough had a 1-1 draw at home to West Bromwich Albion but remain in trouble.
