SAY CHEESE: Elisabeth Fekonia is bringing her cheese-making skills to Monto. Barclay White

ELISABETH Fekonia of Black Mountain, Sunshine Coast, is coming to Monto May 20 to teach the science of fermenting foods, in two workshops running from 9am-12pm.

Mrs Fekonia has been making her own hard cheese for over 20 years and teaching workshops for over 10 years.

Whether she uses her own cow or goat milk or buys bottles of milk from the supermarket, the end result is great cheese.

It all started a couple of decades ago when she decided to start being self-sufficient, wanting to grow and produce her own food.

She doesn't use any specialised equipment but rather looks in op shops and markets for the equipment she needs for her cheese making and fermenting utensils.

Everyone who participates will go away with handouts, sourdough starter, bread dough to bake at home or bake on the day and new skills to last them a lifetime.
