Charges laid following alleged sexual assault

A 44-YEAR-OLD North Bundaberg man has been charged after a 22-year-old female French backpacker was allegedly sexually assaulted at a Bundaberg backpackers' accommodation facility overnight on Sunday.

Bundaberg Criminal Investigations Branch Detective Senior Sergeant Joe Hildred said the man was charged with sexual assault, break and enter with intent and stealing.

Det Sen-Sgt Hildred said police allege sometime between 10pm Sunday and 5am Monday a man allegedly entered several rooms at North Bundaberg Backpackers in Queen St.

He said the man was allegedly observed stealing items from a room including a wallet, bag and other items.

He said the woman was staying in a room with three other females and two males at the time and the alleged sexual assault did not result in result in physical injury.

"Investigations by Scenes of Crime led police to carry out a search warrant on a Gavin St address," he said.

The man will appear in the Bundaberg Magistrates Court Tuesday morning.
