Channel 9 orders second season of Doctor Doctor

DOCTOR Doctor has only been on air two weeks but Channel 9 has already ordered another season of the medical 'dramedy'.

The season two commission was revealed this morning on the Today show and comes after the show was rushed to air to go up against Ten's The Wrong Girl, which premieres tonight.

"We expected it to go to air in 2017," star Nicole Da Silva told APN.

"Then we literally got maybe a week's notice to say they were so in love with the show and were putting it on air the next week. It's great knowing the network felt so confident about the product and were willing to rush it ahead.

"The show's doing great considering we haven't had the (normal) publicity lead up. It's found its audience and really solidified in its time slot.

"We've had a really positive response to the show. It's always so great when you've enjoyed shooting a show and then people enjoy it as much as you do."

The series follows disgraced Sydney heart surgeon Hugh Knight, who is forced to return to his hometown of Whyhope to work as a GP for one year before he's allowed to return to the surgical theatre.

Da Silva, who is currently filming season five of Wentworth, plays Hugh's ex-girlfriend Charlie who is now married to his brother Matt (Ryan Johnson).

"What I fell in love with (in the show's scripts) is how everyone is quite flawed and quirky and has their own thing going on; it makes for a really colourful town," she said.

"The good thing about Doctor Doctor is that there may be a perception out there that country towns are sleepy and not all that exciting but the truth of the matter is they are and a lot going on in rural Australia."

Da Silva said she is looking forward to rounding out her character beyond the beautiful brunette sandwiched between two feuding brothers.

"Most of season one is the set up of her history with Hugh and the reconfiguring of those relationships with her husband and brother-in-law," she said.

"I'm looking forward to exploring her story outside of that dynamic. There are other sides to Charlie and who she is outside of her relationship (with Matt). I know some things that are going to be explored in season two and that may include her quirkier side."

Doctor Doctor airs Wednesdays at 8.40pm on Channel 9.
