Changed tip hours to save $500k per year

AS OF December 1 the opening hours of 10 of BRC's 11 waste facilities will change in a move that will cut more than half a million dollars from the facilities' annual operational expenses.

Waste and Recycling portfolio spokesman Cr Vince Habermann said the changes were adopted by the council earlier this year following an independent review as part of the 2015/16 budget.

"These changes are required to address escalating operational costs and will see the opening hours of a number of waste facilities reduced in line with customer demand," Cr Habermann said.

"The times of greatest demand at each facility were determined following a rigorous analysis of usage statistics which were recorded over a six month period.

"This has allowed us to ensure we can reduce the operational expense of running each waste facility without causing significant impact on residents."

Cr Habermann said the move to reduce operational expenses was necessary to help keep fees and charges for waste facility users down.

"Council has kept the cost to the public of disposing their waste at a very low level compared to other regional councils of a similar size," he said.

"This cost structure can only be maintained if we seek to operate our waste facilities as efficiently as possible, which includes only opening them at periods when there is the greatest level of customer demand.

"After much deliberation, a decision was made to scale back the hours and not continue to open some facilities when usage was very low and thus the costs to Council per user were extremely high.

"The decision was not made lightly and while it may take a little getting used to and some adjustment for some users, I ask that everyone appreciates it is a business decision which had to be made in the pursuit of greater efficiency and ultimately the interests of all ratepayers."
