CCTV footage saved an Australian from a likely execution for supplying drugs in the Philippines.

Damian Berg told the ABC's 7.30 that it was likely an ex-partner of his girlfriend tried to set him up as a drug dealer.

Mr Berg said that on June 21 police dragged him from his Manila apartment into a backstreet where he was arrested for attempting to sell drugs to an undercover police officer.

"Five or six guys came busting in, Filipino guys with drawn firearms," he said.

"I was told to shut up, not to say anything.

"And you do, because they've got the guns, you've got no choice."

As TV crews arrived to film the arrest, officers revealed two bags of ecstasy pills and a large wad of cash.

Mr Berg was charged and locked up, knowing he could be executed under the country's tough drug laws.

Mr Berg asked his girlfriend Marvie to source CCTV footage from the hotel that would prove his innocence.

"I told Marvie the first day that she came to the police barracks, 'You need to get that CCTV footage because this is all lies, it's the only thing that's going to prove my innocence'," he said.

Mr footage confirming Mr Berg's story was played to the court and he was cleared of any wrongdoing on September 15. - ARM NEWSDESK
