Heavy rain closes roads

DUE to heavy rain in the catchment of the Burnett River above the Paradise Dam wall, Booyal Causeway and Booyal Crossing Road has been closed.

Bundaberg regional councillor Wayne Honor said there was a metre of water flowing over the causeway. He said at this stage no other areas were affected.

“There is still some 750mm to go before the Old Wallaville Bridge, on Zillman Road, Wallaville, is unpassable due to flooding,” he said.

“The Perry River Bridge is still trafficable, but motorists should be aware that any more substantial rainfall upstream of the Paradise Dam wall will rapidly rise the Burnett River and subsequently affect the Perry River Bridge.”

Cr Honor said the Perry River also needed to be monitored.

“Heavy falls in the Perry River catchment can exacerbate the rises in the Perry River,” he said.

Cr Honor said it was important residents make preparations for road closures.

“Residents should be prepared with adequate supplies to carry them over if the rapid rises eventuate in the rivers,” Cr Honor said.

Bundaberg police said residents should contact the RACQ road conditions hotline on 1300 130 595 for updates and not the police station.
