Driver's desperate bid to save woman after horror crash
LATEST: The driver of a car that struck a woman in the middle of the road tried desperately to save her life as emergency services rushed to the scene.
The 33-year-old woman was flung metres from the point of impact on Eimeo Rd at Rural View in a horrific incident children witnessed in a nearby Holden Commodore.
Police are now trying to piece together the woman's final moments and have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
Mackay District Duty Officer Mark Sweetnam said the Commodore had been parked on the side of the road and it was believed the woman "came from that vehicle".
"We are trying to establish exactly what has happened out here tonight," Senior Sergeant Sweetnam said.
"She was on the road, on the carriageway - not on the edge.
"(She has) then gone to the side of the road where she was treated by ambulance officers and members of the public, including a family member.
"Unfortunately she has passed away."
Snr Sgt Sweetnam said the male driver of the car that struck the woman had been travelling towards Eimeo at the time of the incident.
"That gentleman actually came back and rendered assistance and started CPR," he said.
Snr Sgt Sweetnam said police had spoken with the man, as well as members of the woman's family who were at the scene at the time.
They were co-operating with investigations.
"The vehicles that were involved and everyone that was involved was still on scene when emergency services arrived," he said.
"There was a vehicle at the side of the road - a white Commodore station wagon.
"We believe she had come from that vehicle.
"There were other people near the vehicle, or in the vehicle, as well.
"If anyone travelling past can recall seeing the white Commodore station wagon, we would appreciate if they could come forward."
Residents in the area around Eimeo Rd near the scene, about 300m from the roundabout intersection with Montgomery St, have been asked to report anything they may have heard between 7pm and 7.30pm.
"Anyone from say 7pm to 7.30pm, or around that time, if they saw or heard anything in the area - it's a residential area - if they could come forward and help us out, it would be greatly appreciated," Snr Sgt Sweetnam said.
"We'll try to piece together what has happened here tonight.
"There's no indication that drugs or alcohol were involved at this stage, on tests that were done (on the) roadside."
