4 vehicles in highway pile-up

MECHANICAL failure is believed to have been a contributing factor to a four-vehicle pile-up that closed the Isis Highway for more than an hour yesterday afternoon.

The woman driver of a Toyota Yaris sedan told Childers police she was travelling towards Bundaberg when her car's engine started to fail, before her car and a Holden Commodore sedan collided near the Cordalba turnoff.

Another car avoided the collision, but an Isuzu truck that had just driven over the crest collided with the rear of the Commodore – cannoning it into the path of an oncoming semi-trailer.

The semi-trailer, which was travelling towards Childers, drove over the front of the Commodore and careered off to the side of the road.

Ambulance and firefighting crews from Childers attended the scene, as did a unit from the Bundaberg Traffic Branch.

The drivers of the two sedans were both taken to Bundaberg Hospital for observation, suffering suspected seatbelt injuries.
