Cane trash fire closes highway
DENSE smoke blanketed the Bruce Highway for more than three hours yesterday after burning cane trash was off-loaded in a desperate bid to save the low-loader on which it was being transported.
The driver of the Collins Hay vehicle saw the trash alight when the prime mover was 15km north of Childers.
He stopped the truck and started to unload the trash before a nearby Bundaberg Regional Council end-loader scraped the smouldering, smoking mess from the loader, on to the highway and over an embankment.
Childers Urban Fire Brigade personnel worked with the end-loader driver to extinguish the fire.
With visibility down to zero, the highway was blocked until police from Biggenden and Childers were satisfied traffic could proceed safely under their direction.
Childers Police senior constable Frank Lawler praised the quick-thinking of the driver.
