Election: Candidate calls for local focus

DIVISION 4 candidate Mike Edgar has joined the growing chorus of demands by business residents and council candidates in demanding Bundaberg Regional Council supports local businesses.

Mr Edgar said the council was one of the biggest businesses in town, employing more than 800 people.

"Council policies have always been to support the locals, in whatever way possible, but this council seems to have lost its way," he said.

"As the biggest business in town the council should lead by example, not sell out our local small business owners by taking council business out of town."

Mr Edgar said on some occasions it might be necessary to seek expertise further afield, but he was concerned this practice seemed to have become entrenched with the daily operations of the council in many ways.

"I understand the council consistently uses a Brisbane-based legal firm, not locals, in matters of council development decisions, either refusals or approvals," he said.
