Taxi driver’s ‘dodgy’ move caught on camera

THE motorist whose dash cam captured the dangerous move of a taxi driver in the Cairns CBD hopes police will take action against him.

Tony Vaughan, a four-wheel driving instructor, was headed home to Mt Sheridan after a family dinner on Tuesday night when his footage showed the Cairns Taxis driver swerving and clipping his vehicle as they drove through traffic on Abbott St.

He posted the footage on social media, while also sending copies to both police and Cairns Taxis who say they have taken "corrective action" against the driver.

Mr Vaughan said he spoke briefly to the driver after catching up to him at the next set of traffic lights, but the man, who had a passenger at the time, allegedly refused to stop and exchange details.

"His attitude was 'tough, that's the way it is'," he said.

"The guy shouldn't be on the road, there could have been pedestrians crossing there.

"I really do hope police follow through."

Mr Vaughan's car sustained only minor damage to the bullbar and he said it was not worth pursuing an insurance claim.

He said as a driving instructor he increasingly saw dangerous behaviour while out on the road and urged motorists to take better care.

"We're going away from being courteous to each other on the roads," he said. "It's a shame we don't all drive a bit better."

Cairns Taxis fleet manager Chris Balson said he had been shocked by the footage and were working with police over the matter.

"It's definitely nothing that we condone in any way, shape or form," he said.

"They are professional drivers and they have to drive in a professional manner.

"We are in the process of taking corrective action. The driver is being dealt with quite severely."

Cairns police Sen-Constable Russell Parker said it represented "very high risk behaviour" which could potentially have placed people in danger.

"Reports such as this are investigated and action is taken where we have evidence such as dash-cam footage," he said.
