Pyne calls it quits if not elected

MEMBER for Cairns Rob Pyne says he will not recontest his seat at the next election if he loses today's vote.

The independent MP has been a regular fixture outside the Mulgrave Rd pre-polling booth in recent weeks but his election-day campaigning is now finished.

He said he would head home before attending an election-night party with supporters at the Balaclava Hotel.

Pyne suggested the headline "Pyne calls it quits", but with voting open until 6pm and counting yet to begin, the underdog MP is still in with a fighting chance.

"The people of Cairns only have to tell me once that they don't want me," he said.

"I've lived in Cairns all my life.

"They know me really well.

"If they don't vote for me, that's an important choice and I'll respect it."

Mr Pyne said he was still hopeful of a win.

It has been an expensive campaign for Mr Pyne, both financially and emotionally.

The Electoral Commission of Queensland donations register reveals he spent $10,000 of his own money on his campaign on November 11.

His mother, Marion Pyne, also donated $10,000 on November 6 towards her son's barnstorming efforts.

Mr Pyne said he expected the Cairns tally to go down to the wire.
